How to prepare for a smooth mobile notary appointment

A little preparation protects your appointment time. Confirm the document, identification, signers, witnesses and meeting location before the notary arrives.

Have the complete document and acceptable identification ready, but wait to sign until the notary directs you.

A notary appointment is a verification process, not document preparation. The notary identifies the signer, observes the required act and completes the notarial certificate. The signer remains responsible for bringing the correct, complete document.

What every signer should bring

What the notary can and cannot do

A notary may verify identity, administer an oath or affirmation when required, witness the signing and complete the notarial certificate. A notary who is not acting as an attorney cannot choose the certificate, explain legal consequences, prepare the document or advise you whether to sign.

Appointment procedure

  1. The notary reviews the appointment scope and the document’s notarial certificate.
  2. Each signer presents identification and demonstrates willingness and awareness.
  3. The required signature, acknowledgment, oath or affirmation is completed.
  4. The notary completes the certificate and records the act as required.
  5. Any requested scan-back, copy or delivery step is completed only if included in the confirmed scope.
